Conceived by local artist Alfred Galvez as a showcase for the rich but oft-overlooked contemporary Mindanao art scene, Art Portal connects collectors with up-and-coming Mindanawon artists through exhibitions, workshops and seminars.

This museum is testament to the fact that Davao is actually the country’s oldest city. Here, you’ll find artifacts that tell the stories of the Bagobo and other lumad (tribes) who first inhabited Davao, as well as of the colonists who travelled to this “land of promise”.

Head to Dahican Beach – a surfer’s paradise 170km southwest of Davao City – and take in the dramatic view of the coastline on a two-seater fixed-wing ultralight aircraft.

The indigenous T’boli people of southern Mindanao take pride in their artistry, as seen in t’nalak, a handwoven textile made from abaca fibres. Observe a weaving demonstration before browsing through a selection of bags and home décor fashioned from this prized material.

The country’s only eco-agritourism resort offers numerous charms. After enjoying the volcanic-sand beach, the 60-hectare forest and the nearby Madaum River, head to The Spot for some halal farm-to-table fare, before retiring to your stateroom in the Plantation House.

After enjoying dinner around the campfire, take in the views of Mount Apo – the country’s highest peak – at this cool-weathered upland retreat in Kapatagan, 70km from Davao City. The facilities found in the hillside or lakeside cottages might be a little rustic, but it’s a great base for those looking to trek through Mount Apo Natural Park.
